The Friends of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitalis a voluntary organisation formed in 2016 following a merger between the two former charities, The Friends of Guy’s Hospital and The Friends of St Thomas’ Hospital.

About The Friends of  Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital

Professor Michael Gleeson

MD, FRCS, FRACS hon, FDS hon

Neurology, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology

Professor Michael Gleeson was born and educated in London. He studied both dentistry and medicine at Guy’s Hospital London, graduating with distinctions and a number of prizes. After internships at Guy’s hospital, he undertook preliminary training in otolaryngology and neurosurgery at the University of Southampton before returning to Guy’s for his residency in otolaryngology, head & neck surgery. In 1983, he was seconded to the University of Washington in Seattle as Chief Resident to Professor Charles Cummings.

Returning to London in 1984, he was awarded a scholarship to work as a fellow Professor Ugo Fisch in Zurich the following year. Upon return to the UK, he was appointed Consultant Surgeon to Guy’s Hospital and Senior Lecturer to the then United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital. In 1994, he was appointed Hunterian Professor to the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a year later became Professor of otolaryngology and skull base surgery at Kings College London. In 2002, he was appointed as the Chair of skull base surgery within the Institute of Neurology at University College London.
